Dan Adamson Senior Pastor

Dan was born and raised in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Dan has grown up a fan of all the Chicago sports teams (except the Cubs) and truly loves the city of Chicago. Dan is very excited to be serving again in an urban church and he has a lot of sympathy for those who are skeptical of or have been burned by the church and organized religion.

Dan is a graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary. Prior to returning back to Chicago Dan served at a church in Decatur Georgia. Dan and his wife, Lynda and children Emily, Ben, Joey and Lucy, live in the south loop.

Dan would love to learn more about you and hear your story. Feel free to e-mail him or contact him on his cell at 312.618.6060.

We at Cityview believe that growth and renewal takes place within the context of community. As we devote ourselves to one another with increasing vulnerability, the gospel frees us from hiding our faults. We are finally free to struggle and as we support each other as the reality of the gospel transforms us.

Community Groups are small gatherings designed to foster Christian community and spiritual growth through regular fellowship, prayer, Bible study, and service. They are a principal way we as a church care for one another and our neighbors. If you would like to visit any of our groups, please email the respective leader and request more specific directions and information.

The Condition of Humanity: Because of the fall, we are more sinful than we could ever imagine (Jeremiah 17:9). Not only have we been corrupted by Adam's sin (Romans 5:12-19), but we are also responsible for our own sin. Our nature, in its original state, not only will not choose to obey the Gospel, it is unable to do so (Romans 3:9-20, 8:5-8). We all are sinners desperately needing God's grace.

The Initiative of God, the Father: Because of our inherent brokenness and sin, we need our God to pursue us, which he certainly does. Why does he do this? Because, while we are more sinful than we could ever imagine, we are also more loved than we had ever dreamed! In His grace, God takes the initiative in establishing relationship with us, reaches down, captures our heart, and invites us into a love relationship with Himself (John 6:37-39, II Thessalonians 2:13-14).

The Work of Jesus, the Son: God didn't just come up with the idea of salvation. He actually provided the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. (John 10:14-15, Ephesians 5:25-27). The death of Jesus was not just an act of goodwill, it was a fully effective act of redemption in which we are now called the beloved daughters and sons of the living God.

The Ministry of the Holy Spirit: Through the Holy Spirit, God is still in the business of transforming lives. The Holy Spirit does this by convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ and by capturing our hearts with the love and mercy of God (Ezekiel 36:25-27). The Spirit of God opens our eyes to the beauty of Jesus Christ (John 6:44-45, Philippians 2:13) and of his grace and affection to our souls.

The Promise of the Gospel: He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it (Phil. 1:6) Through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, God has promised his love for you -- and he will keep that promise. No matter your failure, no matter your struggle, he will never let you go. The Gospel is not about "believing in Jesus and then keeping your moral, ethical or theological ducks in a row". We don't become perfect just because we are followers of Jesus. Rather, we seek to conform our lives to his holiness out of gratitude for his affection for us. None of us will do this perfectly, most of us will often not even do this very well, but the grace of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus sustains us.

Cityview is committed to CATHOLIC doctrine.

By "Catholic" we are referring to the original meaning of the term, which is "according to the whole" or "universal." In other words, we count ourselves as part of God's "holy, catholic, and apostolic Church" and hold to those basic teachings which have been believed by all Christians throughout history that have proclaimed historic Christianity. These teachings have been confessed in the ecumenical creeds of the early church such as the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creeds.

These are some of the basic teachings of the catholic tradition:

The Trinity (one God in three persons of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Incarnation (that Jesus is both God and man).

The Atonement (that Jesus died on the cross and was raised from the dead in order to save sinners).

The Resurrection (that Jesus was raised bodily from the dead and is the first-fruits of the restoration of all of his creation).

Cityview is committed to APOSTOLIC doctrine.

By "apostolic," we are referring to those doctrines taught by the Apostles in the Scriptures and so forcefully reclaimed in the Reformation of the 16th century. We believe that the Scriptures are without error in their original writings, completely trustworthy and the ultimate authority for our beliefs and our lifestyles. We believe that salvation is only by God's grace and is received solely by faith in Christ. We believe in the historicity of the biblical miracles, of the virgin birth, and in the reality of Christ's return.

Cityview is committed to REFORMED doctrine.

We believe that God is sovereign in all things, including salvation, and that the sacraments of baptism and holy communion not only represent God's grace, but also seal and apply that grace to our lives. We are committed to a Presbyterian system of church government and to living out the implications of God's radical grace in every area of life.

Our Mission:

We are imperfect people that gather together in response to the grace of Jesus Christ who are committed to worshiping God, loving each other well and serving the West Loop, the city of Chicago and the world.

We seek to carry out our mission in light of the following core values:

The Gospel

The Gospel is the “good news” about what God has done and is doing through Jesus Christ. It is God’s explosive power that changes everything (Rom 1:16). The gospel is also an invitation to believe this announcement. When we believe and rely on Jesus’ death and resurrection for our relationship to God, the kingdom of power comes upon us and begins to work in and through us in every aspect of life. The gospel is not only how to begin a relationship with God but also how we grow as Christians. We preach the gospel to Christians and non-Christians alike.

Worship

Worship is the foundation of the Christian life. It is the primary purpose of a Christian, so it is the primary purpose of Cityview. Worship is not a goal to be attained; it is a life-long process we enter into. We as a church are constantly learning how to better worship God in the fullness of our lives. When we gather together on Sundays we believe our worship can build up believers and help the spiritually skeptical, curious, & unconvinced. We all need the same thing: to pour our hearts out before God as we confess our sin, fear, joy, anger, hope and need. We all need to hear the wonder of the grace of Christ. We all need to be renewed in His presence, by his Spirit. That is why Worship is the foundation of what we do at Cityview.

Relationships

The Christian life is not to be lived in a vacuum. We are built for relationships. If God has called you into relationship with Him through Christ, he has also called you to join in Christian community. At Cityview, we take this call to community very seriously. We want all of our members and regular attenders to be intentional about building trusting and meaningful spiritual relationships. That is the primary purpose behind our Community Groups. These groups enable us to live in genuine community with one another and the neighborhoods we reside in.

Service

In his promise to Abraham, God said, "I will be your God and you will be my people." That promise was brought to fullness in the death and resurrection of Jesus. But, God didn't call us to be his people just so we can worship him and enjoy each other. Rather, he calls us to be his people, "in order to be a blessing to the `nations." In other words, we are called to be conduits of the beauty and grace of Jesus to our world. Every Christian is called to this and it is essential for the process of growing into a mature follower of Christ. Every person at Cityview is encouraged to be actively engaged in bringing healing, hope, beauty and renewal to our city in the name of our risen Savior. In so doing, we live out the love of Christ to others in our Church, our City and our World.

The City

We believe God loves the City. Cities are central to Jesus’ mission, and the mission of the early church, and to ours (Luke 4:43).The city is not a place to be avoided nor merely tolerated but a strategic mission field where God’s people should be present and ministering. We encourage Christians to learn from the city, to accept and love its people, to invest their resources back into the city, and to seek to serve the physical and spiritual needs of the city.

Kingdom

The Church is to serve as a foretaste and model of God’s coming kingdom, the renewal of all things. The values of Jesus’ kingdom often subvert our own, and those of our culture—extending beyond any single race, ethnicity, tradition or ideology. We aim to be a community that is defined by its loyalty to Jesus and is committed to seeing the city of Chicago become more like the Kingdom of God.

Our Sunday service of corporate worship is a time when we gather together to celebrate what God is doing in the world through Jesus Christ. Our worship consists of song and prayer, teaching and celebration of the Lord’s Supper, and fellowship. Whether you consider yourself a Christian spiritually-skeptical or curious about Christianity, we would love for you to join us.

What about children and nursery:

Children are always welcome in worship, but nursery is provided for children under age three as well, should parents prefer. Children’s education is available for the “older kids" during the sermon.

What to wear:

For whatever reason, the question of appropriate attire can cause a great deal of anxiety. At Cityview, while we are certainly on the more casual end of the spectrum, you are free to wear whatever you are most comfortable in. A dress is great. Jeans are absolutely fine. Truthfully, it doesn't matter.
